THE ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR
YOUR JULY 2000 RANDOM MOVIE CLUB RESULTS ARE IN!
You can't go wrong with any movie selected randomly if you get to watch a few Chuck Jones cartoons first. "What's Opera, Doc?" and "One Froggy Evening", to satisfy the classic WB cartoon lover in you, and then "High Note". This rarely seen chestnut is so clever. Music notes come alive and take on personalities while the conductor (also a note) has trouble with a drunk note in "The Blue Danube". Smart and clever, clever, clever.
And, in my opinion, AMC theatres stole this for their mascot Clip, who conducts the orchestra and has trouble with the notes falling off the page in their interstitial to welcome the feature presentation.
The movie was THE ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR. Now when I taped this in the early 80s, it was not available on VHS. So I got a BETA copy and dubbed it! It was colorized, so, in a moment of clarity, I ... SHUT THE COLOR OFF ON THE TV SET.
The movie, later remade as FLUBBER starring Robin Williams, is typical Disney fare. Fred McMurray plays the title role. He's just amazing. To think that the same man played Walter Neff in Billy Wilder's DOUBLE INDEMNITY just makes my heart race. He invents Flubber™, and uses it to win the basketball game, his girl, and the nation. A fluffy movie and a great double bill with the cartoons (how was I to know?).
