THE ADVENTURES OF PLUTO NASH

YOUR MAY 2004 RANDOM MOVIE CLUB RESULTS ARE IN!

The Preshow Entertainment was the Academy Awards from 1984. We watched a long Johnny Carson joke-spewing (all quite good), and commented on how radically the AAs changed in 20 years. They gave awards for best short and some other stuff they'd never dare do now, not with the short attention span generation watching.

Unfortunately, the movie was THE ADVENTURES OF PLUTO NASH. What was funny about this was that I just added that to the pool recently, jokingly saying, "we need a few more clunkers...wouldn't it be funny if we got this one? It's 1:1200" (technically 2:1200, since it was month two).

Now, we love bad movies. We like joking around and having fun with them. But every now and then a movie is so bad, we just sit there in pain. In five years, it's happened twice (RIVER RED and THE BUMBLEBEE FLIES AWAY). I didn't think it would happen to a major studio picture. But it did. Yes, Pluto killed us. It was so awful, it made the pizza taste good.

What a waste of a fun cast (Randy Quaid, Joe Pantoliano, Luiz Guzman, Peter Boyle, Burt Young, Illeana Douglas, and even John Cleese, trapped again in a movie (and a tv monitor in a car).

I'm not sure what happened in the movie. I think Eddie Murphy, who plays Pluto Nash, gets out of jail and opens a club that bad guys want to take from him. Something else happened, I'm sure, but that's where I lost interest. I even called the ending. But because I know all of you want to see this movie, I won't give it away.

Director Ron Underwood, was nominated for the Razzie Award for Worst Director. Lucky for him Guy Ritchie made SWEPT AWAY that year, and ran away with his award. And Underwood, who once helmed the camp classic TREMORS and then the financially successful CITY SLICKERS is now back to making TV movies.

Here's some facts I pulled from IMDB:
This movie was shelved for almost two years before it was released. In absolute terms, this movie made the largest financial loss of any movie to date, with a budget of $100 million and a total US gross of $4.41 million (total loss, $95.59 million).
