DON JUAN DEMARCO

YOUR AUGUST 2004 RMC RESULTS ARE IN!

For the Preshow Entertainment, we watched a HONEYMOONERS episode (from the classic 39, of course) that killed us dead- BROTHER RALPH. Ralph gets laid off, so Alice must get a job. It doesn't take long for Ralph's jealousy to rise, especially when he learns that not only are everyone at the office men, but they all think she is single. And Ralph has to pretend he is her brother.

When Alice yells out what his salary is, Ralph shh's her with, "Will you be quiet? I don't want my salary to leak out!" And Alice says the killer line, with that perfect dry delivery, "Your salary couldn't drip out."

The movie selected was another DVD. 1200 movies and maybe 30 are DVDs, and this was our third. It was also our most recent DVD acquisition; a movie given to us for free when we ordered a Papa John's pizza two months ago. They gave us a choice of WEEKEND AT BERNIE'S, TRIAL & ERROR and this one. Since I'd seen WAB and T & E, I chose this one. It came in a DVD-sized envelope, which I had to place among the CDs, since it was of size. Of course, the catch is, 12 minutes of trailers that you can't fast forward through. Wow, is that low.

The movie was DON JUAN DEMARCO. What a beautiful movie. Johnny Depp plays Don Juan, the world's greatest lover. Or so he thinks. Marlon Brando is his appointed psychiatrist, who at first is forbidden to have Don Juan as a patient (he is retiring in a week, which is not enough time to cure Don Juan from his delusion). But when the shrink in charge realizes it's more than he can handle, they call in the heavyweight (pun intended).

As Don Juan's story unfolds in perfect rhythmic flashbacks, we begin to believe the yarn. But how can it be? He's really a kid from Queens, via Arizona. Faye Dunaway is charming as Brando's wife, who reaps the benefits of Brando's relationship with Depp and his lust-filled stories. Yet, although it's another movie about the student teaching the teacher, the journey to the movie's end is magnificent, full of giddiness and whimsy. You laugh not from jokes or sight gags, but from character choices, and the situations. And with these two players on board, you know their choices are going to be pretty great.

I record over movies after we watch them. With DVDs, I sell them back. But this one I am keeping. I totally recommend this movie. Even with that shitty Bryan Adams song popping up throughout. That's how good it is.
